Have you noticed how the whole world is buzzing and scared of the swine flu??
Of course you have. How can you not? Every now and then we got a scary headline that another person died of the disease, making everyone really scared of this mysterious new form of flu.
It seems that lately, those alarming headlines calmed down, and instead, people are talking a lot about a vaccine.
I decided to start reading about the swine flu, to know more about it.
The more I read, the more paranoid I became- is it possible that we are being scared out of our minds over a simple disease? Is it possible, that we are being pumped with only one side of the story?
I mean, there were little notices about people recovering from swine flu just like any other flu, but for some reason, those little articles were not made into huge headlines.
Why is that? Could it be that the reason for spreading the fear is for better vaccine sales?

You thought I forgot, didn’t you?
Now really, how can I forget about this hefty book, sitting on my desk just waiting for me to read it??
How to needle a child?
We’re on page 80 (for those who are following), and Julian starts talking about practical things- how does one needle a child? What is the right technique?
On Julian’s website you can find a double DVD that explains, among other things, the technique Julian uses in his practice. It can help you master the technique, and understand it better. In the book you can of course find illustrations of the technique to help you start.
The technique is important, especially with young babies and toddles who tend to be on the move. Many of them don’t like to be pinned down and so the practitioner must be quick with finding the acupuncture point and super-quick with needling the point and applying the desired manipulation.
Julian offers many tips on this subject and so ends the first part of the book.

When my boy suffered his 2nd asthma attack, I had a fall out with Chinese Medicine.
As a result I didn’t even want to look at Julian Scott’s book about children. Nothing against the book or Julian, but I needed a break.
My faith in Chinese Medicine is now restored, and I am able to go on with reading Julian’s book.
A small addition about excess and deficiency
Last time we talked about excess and deficiency and I would like to add, that Julian addresses an important factor in children’s health- LPF.
As we are in the era of antibiotics, this is an issue that is worth reading and looking into, as it can cause a situation of LPF in children.

In a previous post I started to talk about Julian Scott’s book- Acupuncture in the Treatment of Children
.
Shahar is going through a great time, even with the latest cough he’s in a great mood, and we were able to stop the attack in time so we feel very good parents.
This great time allows me to read a bit more quietly about Julian’s observation between an excess type child and a deficiency type child.
The importance of diagnosing
We’re talking about a basic principle in Chinese Medicine in general (excess/deficiency), and Julian stresses that when it comes to children, it is even more basic.
A deficiency type person will be different than an excess type person, this we know by the middle of our 2nd year in school. In children it is even more obvious.
It makes sense, remembering that children don’t have the masks us adults have, children don’t have the weight of the years upon them that one might see in an adult’s eyes. Granted there are other problems, but in general, it is easier to know if we have a case of excess or deficiency when we diagnose a child.

A few months ago I told you that I have decided to take a course about the treatment of children with Chinese Medicine.
AFter giving it more thought, I have decided that it is not the best thing to do, take a full year’s course, not because it’s not worth it, but more because I am not about to treat children. I just want to know how to help my child a bit more than just hold him when he’s in pain.
So I thought that maybe I should just read about it, at least as a first step. I ordered my copy of Acupuncture in the Treatment of Children
, and it’s been 3 weeks now that the book is on my desk, waiting to be read.
In order to make sure that I actually read it, I will try to give you a book report every two weeks and share with you my thoughts, what I have learned, and other wonderful thoughts that enter my brain.
I’m reading the book page by page, although I admit that I’m jumping ahead every now and then to read Julian’s thoughts about issues that are very relevant to our lives now- like cough. Vomitting.
But those who heard Julian talk know that Julian is an excellent teacher, with a very clear structure to his lectures and his books. One thing is based on another, so reading everything in order will help understand everything a whole lot better.
