Books About Five Elements and Shen

Posted on March 2, 2009 by 3 Comments

yair_booksAlmost all the books about Chinese Medicine are on important subjects.
Sometimes, it seems as though some subjects don’t have enough written work about them. When we find a book on one of the subjects, it seems as though we found a treasure, which immediately makes the book and the subject important.

Five Elements and the Shen are two examples to very important subjects.
There’s very little information about these subjects, and in some books, the price tag is enough to cause some kind of disturbance in one’s mind.
One of two courses I am taking this year is about the Five Elements and the Shen. We got a list of recommended books, and I will go over some of the books, hoping to share some new books with you, or at least remind you of the books you forgot about:

Barack Obama and The Wood Element

Posted on January 21, 2009 by 3 Comments

obamaCongratulations America!
You have a new president, Barack Obama. I have to admit, I’m jealous. What charisma! Such promise!
I think this is the first time when a political leader has spread so much joy around the world.
I watched president Obama in Washington today, and I was thinking, that he is a wonderful example of the Wood element.

Hope, dreams and the man with the plan
President Obama has a plan- for the USA and for the rest of the world.
The fact that he has a plan is so Wood element- being the one in charge, knowing what needs to be done and plan the way to do it.
This plan is not designed for war. When we think about the Wood element we sometimes think of the general in the army.
This is not the case.
In this case, the plan is directed for a better world.

Ian Brown and Chinese Medicine

…Or to be more precise- Ian Brown and the Fire Element in Chinese Medicine.

May 31st marks the first ever performance of Ian Brown in Israel.
If you don’t know, Israel is not a place where we get many performances by wonderful artists such as Ian Brown. Security issues are always clouding potential visits from rock gods- even if they are not justified, and when someone finally comes our way- we pray for weeks that performance won’t be canceled in the last minute.

5 Elements and TCM

~Dedicated to my beautiful friend who asks wise questions~

I’ve been asked to write about the difference between TCM acupuncture and 5 Elements theory.
Oy! So much to be said, how can I leave something out? And will it be clear? Am I really the person for the task??
OK, deep breath…. right. Now.
This is what I came up with, and feel free to add your own perspective in the comments section.

5E in short
The 5 Elements theory (or the 5 phases) is a vital part of Chinese philosophy.
In Man we can see a reflection of nature, meaning that we can see in Man many of the phases that occur in nature, as Man is a part of nature.
The 5 elements according to CM are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water.
All of the things we can see around us can be categorized according to the 5E- emotions, sounds, seasons, colors and so on.
According to this theory, a person has the 5E in him at all times, but one element stands in the heart of that individual, one element is the core of a person being. Know what that element is and you will understand what makes this person tick.
Of course there are other elements that can be seen in this person, sometimes one uses an element that is not the core element to protect himself, therefore confusing people around him and practitioners.
