I know that May 15 is tomorrow, but I won’t be able to actually go online and write, so I’m posting this a bit earlier.

One of many things I love about the Internet is being able to actually tell the world you are supportive of something that is very important for you.
Human rights is a very big issue, and so many things fall into that category.
I choose to write briefly about the violation of basic human rights where women are concerned.

No, I’m not an annoying feminist who thinks women are better than men.
I am a cool and calm feminist who thinks women are not treated equally, and just to remind everyone, this the 21st century now, things should have been different.
One thing we can look at is un-equal salaries. Women still don’t make the same salaries as men do, at least that’s how it is here in Israel.
Another thing- which is probably even more important than money- women are still a target for rape, sexual abuse, incest and so on.

Sexual assaults are crimes of violence.
Maybe this isn’t what Blogcatalog had in mind when they were talking about human rights, but a person who commits such a crime is crushing the basic human rights of the woman he’s assaulting- and that’s only the beginning of all the other things that will be crushed after the assault.
And I find it an important issue, extremely important issue to talk about at a day like this.

In Israel, it is estimated that 1 of every 3 women will go through some sort of sexual abuse, including verbal abuse. 1 of 3 women! How can that still be happening at this day and age?
And how can this be happening EVERYWHERE?
This is like cancer, it’s running around, no matter where, no matter when, no matter who- and it just strikes.
It doesn’t matter if you’re rich or poor, middle class or high class, a teenager, an older woman- even a 10 year old girl can be subjected to her father’s twisted soul and actually give birth to his baby.
And I’m not even going to bring up the very evil Austrian man who imprisoned his daughter for so many years and she gave birth to this children, who never saw the light of day.
And like cancer, there’s just no stopping this thing.

How can this be?!

I urge you to take a stand, and voice it when ever you can.
Support a group, be open about it, and break the circle of silence there is around this terrible people’s epidemic. Not talking about it makes the victims feel worse. Not wanting to hear about it makes the victims feel even more alone, and more as though they did something wrong.
If you know of someone who went through a sexual trauma- encourage them to get professional help.
Chinese Medicine is good, but not instead of psycho-therapy. Together these two are the best way to over come the horrifying experience.

If you want to read more about this subject and understand it better, I highly recommend the book Trauma and Recovery by Judith Lewis Herman.

Yeah. This thing pisses me off.
I hope it pisses you off as well.
